Our PGY 4/5s attended the 2024 annual AAHKS meeting as well as the preceding resident course with hands on cadaver lab in Dallas Texas this past weekend. This course allows residents the opportunity to learn the latest information regarding total joint arthroplasty from nationally renowned experts.

Resident Spotlight: Kyle Swanson, PGY-1 Where are you from? Montgomery, TX What specialty do you want to go into, if any? Most likely adult recon or sports, but I want to handle community trauma wherever I end up practicing as well. What do you enjoy most in ortho? I like to fix things. In the sense of trauma it is incredibly rewarding to help patients return to their day to day activities and allow them to get back to normal life again. With elective cases such as joint replacements it’s equally as rewarding to see patients return to activities that they haven’t been able to do for years due to pain or functional limitations. What do you enjoy about the program? From a people standpoint, the camaraderie with my coresidents and the involvement of our attendings pushes me to be the best version of myself every day. From a training and educational standpoint, we have a great experience in the big three of arthroplasty, sports and trauma. The opportunity to work at a level 1 adult and level 2 pediatric trauma center with 3 traumatologists who are heavily invested in our education provides a special training opportunity to become proficient in standard trauma cases and to expand critical thinking skills and technical abilities for the complex cases that we routinely see here. What surprised you about residency? How much support I receive on a daily basis. What are your hobbies? Spending free time with my amazing wife and lifting weights. What/where was the last vacation you’ve been on? Cabo San Lucas for my honeymoon before starting residency What advice do you have for aspiring medical students? Challenge yourself to be better than you were yesterday by prioritizing your mental and physical health. Cut out things that aren’t important in your day and invest into what you really care about.
